Construction will start on 23 October to improve congestion along Thane Road heading towards the ring road by increasing junction capacity at the mini-roundabout where Thane Road meets Lenton Lane.
Due to last until early January 2024, the Government-funded works will widen the highway by slightly realigning the existing southern footway to enable the road to be widened to introduce an additional traffic lane on Thane Road between Bull Close Lane and the mini-roundabout. This will provide a dedicated right-turn approach lane into the mini-roundabout.
As part of the new footway alignment, a new smooth surface will be provided and lighting columns moved out of the way to create a new shared-use unobstructed facility for pedestrians and cyclists; continuing the programme of infrastructure improvements to accommodate increasing levels of cycling.
From Monday 23 October:
- a road closure will be in place between the ring road and Thane Road (westbound)
- traffic will be diverted along the ring road turning left onto Redfield Road then the first left turn onto Abbeyfield Road to continue the onward journey onto Thane Road
- Access to businesses and leisure facilities off Lenton Lane will follow the diversion route, turning left at the mini-roundabout (heading back to the ring road) then turning right onto Lenton Lane.
From 6 November, the road closure will be removed and until completion of this programme of works, traffic will be managed around the site by temporary two-way traffic lights between Lenton Lane and Bull Close Road.
No diversion route is required but extra time for journeys along this route is recommended.

In 2020, Nottingham and Derby City Councils were successful in securing unprecedented funding from the Department of Transport’s Transforming Cities fund when they were awarded £161m for a huge programme of transport improvements.

This scheme is part of an ongoing package of enhancements along the Southern Growth Corridor designed to serve existing employment sites and to cater for the travel demand predicted from new housing, employment and leisure developments along the corridor.

Later phases include proposals for a new eastbound bus lane from Boots to the A52 / Queens Drive Park and Ride site providing new bus priority measures and enhancing links to existing bus-based park and ride sites with further cycle links improvements incorporating new pedestrian connectivity measures to businesses and facilities along Thane Road.
