Three horses running loose closes the A1 northbound

The A1 is closed northbound between the B668 and the A151 near South Witham due to a number of horses in the road.

Update 3.50pm: Police:

‘We have located all the horses involved and are waiting for a horsebox to assist securing them back to their correct home.

‘Thankfully the horses have only obtained minor injuries from getting through their fences. Many thanks for your patience.’

Lincolnshire Police said:

‘We are currently attending to 3 horses which are loose and running Southbound on the Northbound carriageway of the A1 at South Witham – we have a number of resources attending but please travel with care.’

National Highways said:

‘The A1 is closed northbound between the B668 and the A151 near South Witham due to a number of horses in the road.

Lincolnshire police are on scene and leading the response to this incident and advised the road has been shut to ensure the safety of road users.’

Diversion Route: 

Traffic is being diverted via local routes at this time.

AA Roadwatch reports:

‘Road closed and queueing traffic due to emergency fence repairs and earlier horses in the road on A1 Great North Road Northbound from B668 (Stretton / Greetham Turn Off) to A151 (Colsterworth Services Junction). Affecting traffic towards Grantham.’
