Testing

There were 2,031,729 tests reported on 5 January 2022. This shows an increase of 14.0%compared to the previous 7 days.

Between 30 December 2021 and 5 January 2022, there have been 11,362,910 tests.

Cases

A confirmed case is someone who has tested positive for coronavirus.

179,756 new people had a confirmed positive test result reported on 6 January 2022.

Between 31 December 2021 and 6 January 2022, 1,272,131 people had a confirmed positive test result. This shows an increase of 29.3% compared to the previous 7 days.

Vaccinations

Vaccines are currently given in 3 doses.

51,874,548 people had been given a first dose by the end of 5 January 2022.

47,565,340 people had been given a second dose by the end of 5 January 2022.

34,834,288 people had been given a booster or third dose by the end of 5 January 2022.

Healthcare

Some people with coronavirus have to go into hospital.

2,078 people with coronavirus went into hospital on 2 January 2022.

Between 27 December 2021 and 2 January 2022, 15,280 went into hospital with coronavirus. This shows an increase of 64.7% compared to the previous 7 days.

There were 17,988 patients in hospital with coronavirus on 5 January 2022.

Some people in the hospital need to use a special device called a mechanical ventilator to help them breathe.

There were 875 coronavirus patients in hospital beds with a mechanical ventilator on 5 January 2022.

Deaths

There were 231 deaths within 28 days of a positive test for coronavirus reported on 6 January 2022.

Between 31 December 2021 and 6 January 2022, there have been 1,094 deaths within 28 days of a positive coronavirus test. This shows an increase of 56.1% compared to the previous 7 days.
