Van driver travels wrong way along Western Boulevard to evade police car

Police managed to arrest a suspect after being led on a pursuit around Bilborough and Basford.

Operational Support officers spotted a van driving with its lights off in the early hours of Thursday (26 June) so pulled it over.

After getting out of their car to speak to the driver in Wigman Road, the motorist suddenly hit the accelerator and drove away.

A pursuit then took place across Nottingham’s city west when the van performed a u-turn and did a lap around a collection of garages.

More erratic driving followed over the next few minutes, with the vehicle swerving all over the road and going the wrong way around a roundabout.

With the blue-lighted police car behind it, the driver ran a red light, before taking a right turn onto the A6514 Western Boulevard to try and evade officers.

The damaged vehicle was at that point seen to travel around 600 metres along the wrong side of the empty dual carriageway.

With the van running on its rims and sparks flying everywhere, the driver turned off Western Boulevard, before deciding to abandon the vehicle and make a run for it.

The Operational Support team in pursuit were at that point joined by response officers, who between them managed to track down a suspect in a nearby garden.

A 34-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and failing to stop.

While this was taking place, a bag of cocaine was found in the vehicle, so the suspect was made to take a drugs wipe, which tested positive for traces of the drug.

As a result, he was additionally arrested on suspicion of drug-driving and possessing Class A drugs.

Inspector Chris Chell, of Nottinghamshire Police, said:

“Thanks to the superior driving skills of our pursuing officers and the time when this happened, nobody was injured during this incident.

“The person behind the wheel of the van should count themselves extremely lucky that was the case though, as their standard of driving was very dangerous, as shown by the footage released.

“They went the wrong way around roundabouts, drove erratically through residential areas, and even travelled on the wrong side of a dual carriageway for a protracted amount of time.

“As I’ve said, thankfully because it was in the early hours of the morning, the roads weren’t busy, otherwise this could’ve led to a very serious accident.

“By trailing the van from a safe distance, the officers in pursuit ensured this didn’t happen and arrested a suspect soon afterwards, so they deserve a lot of credit for their efforts.”
