Warning to West Bridgford residents over QR code parking scam

The warning relates to on-street parking meters and not car parks, however people should remain vigilant to parking QR code scams.

Nottinghamshire County Council operates the parking meters on streets in West Bridgford  ( not car parks ) that were installed in March 2025.

The council said:

‘Pay-and-display parking scam alert

‘Scammers are sticking fake QR payment codes on pay-and-display machines. Some were found in West Bridgford today.

‘If you suspect a QR scam, email nccparkingmanager@nottscc.gov.uk.

‘If you have lost funds due to a scam, contact your bank.’

Meters are installed on:

Albert Road, Florence Road, Gordon Road, Gordon Square, Rectory Road, Priory Road, Bridgford Road, Church Drive and Davies Road.

The scam works because if people scan the QR code on a mobile device thinking they’ll reach a payment website, they will reach a fake website which takes payments.

The parking meters have contactless card, PIN code card and ApplePay and Google Pay and do not require any websites or QR codes to pay for parking.

A similar scam operated in Newark car parks in December and the council said then:

‘‘We have been alerted to a possible scam on multiple NSDC car parks and pay machines where fake QR codes have been attached to PaybyPhone signage on pay machines

‘These have currently been removed on Riverside Arena, Riverside, and London Road. We are in the process of checking all signage across our car parks.

‘Please be mindful if scanning a QR code on an NSDC car park, if anything does not look right please speak to Parking Services on 01636 665 0000.’

Though no incidents have been reported today at Rushcliffe Borough Council ( who operate the off-street car parks ) parking sites drivers should apply the same caution if using payment machines.
