When do the clocks go back in 2026? UK prepares for return to GMT

Clocks across the UK will go back one hour on Sunday 25 October, marking the end of British Summer Time and the return to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT).

The change takes place at 2am, when clocks turn back to 1am, giving people an extra hour overnight. It applies across Nottinghamshire and the rest of the UK.

The switch means lighter mornings and earlier darkness in the evenings compared with staying on British Summer Time. Sunrise and sunset will be around an hour earlier by the clock.

Do clocks go back or forward?

In October, clocks go back one hour. Anyone adjusting a clock before going to bed on Saturday 24 October should set it an hour earlier.

The UK changes its clocks twice each year, moving forward on the last Sunday in March and back on the last Sunday in October. During British Summer Time, the UK is one hour ahead of GMT.

Will phones change automatically?

Most smartphones, computers and other connected devices update automatically if their automatic date and time settings are enabled.

Traditional clocks, some watches, car clocks and kitchen appliances may need to be adjusted manually.

When will the clocks go forward again?

British Summer Time returns on Sunday 28 March 2027, when clocks move forward from 1am to 2am.
