Woman arrested after machete found in shopping bag

A suspect has been charged after a machete was found in a shopping bag by knife crime officers.

The city knife crime team was carrying out patrols of the St Ann’s area when the discovery was made.

While attending Devon Street for a separate matter at 3.25pm on Tuesday (5 March), officers spotted suspicious activity.

After moving in to investigate, they found a machete inside a shopping bag.

The weapon was seized by the officers, while a female suspect was then duly arrested.

A 49-year-old woman was subsequently charged with possessing a knife in a public place.

She has been released on bail and is due to appear at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on 22 March 2024.

Sergeant Matt Daley, of the city knife crime team, said: “Anyone who carries a knife or other bladed weapon in public needs to know this will never be tolerated by the police and will result in action being taken.

“Our team carries out daily patrols of our communities to try and keep these kinds of dangerous weapons off our streets.

“We will always look to put anyone that’s found to have a knife in their possession while out in public before the courts.”
