Nottingham has sixth highest coronavirus infection rate in England which could mean further restrictions

There are concerns that Nottingham city could face further lockdown restrictions following a huge increase in its COVID-19 infection rate.

Nottingham saw its infection rate more than quadruple from 52.0 to 283.9, with 945 new cases, and Sheffield’s more than doubled from 91.8 to 233.1, with 1,363 new cases in the time period.

City Public Health Director Alison Challenger is expected to discuss with Public Health England whether the figures are because of the widely-publicised national delay in recording cases, and if further measures are to be considered.

The latest figures give Nottingham the fifth or sixth highest infection rate in the country. Figures change as results keep coming in and added to measures.

There are also sharp rises in Newcastle upon Tyne, Nottingham, Leeds and Sheffield.

Public Health England (PHE) said the technical issue resulted in 15,841 cases between 25 September and 2 October being left out of the reported daily coronavirus cases.

City Council leader David Mellen said:

‘New data from Public Health England confirms there are more cases of Covid-19 in our city than we were aware of last week. Our numbers are now significant. Every ward in the city is seeing an increase in cases, matching the rising trend in confirmed cases of Covid-19 nationally. This is very worrying for Nottingham and we are working with Public Health England and with all partners in the city today to urgently consider what next steps need to be taken.’
