Edwalton Primary School maintains its high standards says Ofsted

The inspection described the school as ‘aspirational for every pupil’, praising its use of unique resources to enrich pupils’ education.

Edwalton Primary School has maintained its high standards, according to a newly published Ofsted report.

Based on Wellin Lane in Edwalton, the school is renowned locally for its own farm, home to alpacas, goats, lambs, chickens, rabbits, and guinea pigs, as well as a three-acre mature woodland used for outdoor learning.

The report states: ‘Pupils relish the enriching experiences the school provides, such as learning in the school’s farm and woodlands. They benefit from inspiring visits and visitors, along with a wide range of activities that challenge them and nurture their talents. Pupils take pride in contributing to school life—whether as eco-leaders, school parliamentarians, or play leaders—and show deep respect for others and the world around them. All this prepares them exceptionally well for their next steps.’

Headteacher Dan Graney said: “We are very proud of the many positives highlighted in the report and want to thank our children and their supportive families for making this school such a special place. I’d also like to recognise our dedicated staff team for their hard work and commitment every day, as well as our multi-academy trust, The Flying High Partnership, for their ongoing support.”

Parents and carers were described as ‘overwhelmingly appreciative’ that their children are happy and thriving. One parent’s comment summed it up: pupils are ‘valued, cared for, and encouraged to be their best every day.’

The school’s curriculum was praised as well-structured, ambitious, and engaging, with strong learning habits established from Reception year. Children consistently achieve highly in mathematics, while reading is a key priority.

The report notes: ‘Pupils learn demanding vocabulary through the wide range of texts at the heart of the curriculum. Subject-specific vocabulary is prioritised in every topic, and communication skills are skilfully woven into learning from Reception onwards. Teachers help pupils structure written and oral responses with increasing sophistication, fostering confident communicators.’

The school provides high-quality, ongoing staff training, including collaborative opportunities within the trust, contributing significantly to continuous improvement. Ofsted highlighted the school’s ‘rigorous’ approach to inclusivity, stating: ‘Sensitive support helps disadvantaged pupils, including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities, learn successfully alongside their peers. Pupils achieve well from their individual starting points.’

Personal development was also commended: ‘Pupils access a broad, carefully crafted enrichment programme. They learn to value themselves, each other, and their community, while celebrating diverse cultures, beliefs, and family structures. Older pupils discuss views with maturity, thoughtfully considering others’ perspectives—preparing them well for life in modern Britain.’

Staff expressed pride in working at the school, and the report highlighted strong relationships with families, high attendance, and effective safeguarding.

Headteacher Dan Graney added: “Our children were fantastic ambassadors during the inspection and a credit to their families. We’re proud not only of their achievements but also the unique opportunities we provide—truly bringing learning to life. Not many schools have two-day-old lambs arriving during an Ofsted inspection!

“We remain committed to building on this success, ensuring our children enjoy a joyful, fulfilling education that equips them for their next steps.”
