Woman jailed for not using a shopping basket

A persistent criminal has been jailed after breaching a court order that bans her from shopping without a basket.

Kirsty Banks was made the subject of a Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO) in March 2023 after a successful police application to Nottingham Magistrates’ Court.

The order, granted for a period of three years, ensures she must use a shop basket and trolley when entering a shop.

Banks, of no fixed address, must also pay for items at a till and not use a self-service checkout.

Officers were called after Banks had entered Sainsbury’s in Derby Road, Lenton, on Saturday (21 February).

Not only did she steal £30 worth of drink bottles, but she also failed to use a shopping basket as required.

Instead, the 35-year-old used a plastic shopping bag to unsuccessfully conceal the items she brazenly took off the shelves.

Banks pleaded guilty to both the breach and shop theft when she put before Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday (24 February).

She was jailed for 28 weeks.

PC Sarah Barnes, of the city central neighbourhood policing team, said:

“Criminal behaviour orders are an effective way to manage the behaviour of persistent offenders and protect local businesses and shopworkers from harm.

“The idea of having to use a basket and a trolley may seem trivial to some, but we are putting prevention methods in place to stop Banks from potentially disguising items and taking them out the store.

“As she has discovered to her cost, these orders have real teeth and mean we can get prolific criminals off the streets quickly and effectively.”
