Man jailed after drunken living room assault left victim with facial fractures

A man was left with significant injuries after being attacked during a drinking session.
Kyle Somerville subjected his victim to a vicious assault after flying into a drunken rage.

The duo had been out drinking together for several hours earlier that night without any issues.

This all changed, however, when they attended an address in Kirkby-in-Ashfield in the early hours of the morning.

An argument boiled over between the two men and a fight broke out in the middle of the living room.

During the fracas, Somerville threw the other man to the floor before repeatedly punching and kicking him in the head.

The attack on 25 April last year left Somerville’s victim with several facial fractures and caused lasting effects to his vision.

Having inflicted the injuries, the 30-year-old then went out for a cigarette and waited while his partner called an ambulance.

Emergency services arrived at the address soon after, and police placed Somerville under arrest.

Having initially denied the offence of causing grievous bodily harm with intent, he changed his plea during a court appearance last October.

Somerville, of Hawthorne Avenue, Shirebrook, then returned to Nottingham Crown Court to be sentenced on Tuesday (24 February).

He was jailed for four years and one month.

Somerville was also made subject to an indefinite restraining order, preventing him from contacting his victim until further order.

Detective Sergeant Chloe Palmer, of Nottinghamshire Police, said:

“The violence and aggression shown by Kyle Somerville that morning was completely unacceptable.

“His decision to repeatedly punch and kick a man he knew ultimately left his victim with significant injuries, mainly to his face.

“While both men had been drinking together for several hours in the lead-up to the assault, being drunk really isn’t an excuse for doing what he did.

“We’re pleased to see Somerville is now facing the consequences of his actions in the form of a spell behind bars.”
