East Leake: Care home minibus stolen and dumped in field without engine

Police are investigating after a minibus used by a care home in East Leake was stolen, dumped in a field and stripped of its engine.

The vehicle, which belonged to Derbyshire House, a charitable trust care home in East Leake, was taken from the premises sometime between 8pm on Sunday and 8am on Monday.

It was later found abandoned in a field between Wysall and Widmerpool, but the engine had been removed and parts were left in the long grass.

Sharon Smith, from Derbyshire House, said the minibus was “invaluable” to the home and was used for a wide range of practical and personal journeys for residents.

She said it helped staff take elderly residents to hospital appointments and other visits, and had also allowed one resident to visit his wife at another care home.

Sharon added: “My personal opinion is that it was targeted. You cannot just lift an engine out. The van says Derbyshire House all over it.

“It is very clear that it is a residential care home van for elderly people, it is a bit disappointing.”

She said the vehicle had been bought more than a decade ago but had been kept in “good nick”, adding that its loss would be felt by staff and residents.

“I think we take for granted just how easy it was — if we needed to do something we could use the minibus. If we were picking up furniture or supplies, we could do that any time.

“It was used to help residents that lived far away move in.

“I do not think we will realise the impact until it is not there to use. Obviously we will replace it but it is not going to happen any time soon.”

Nottinghamshire Police said enquiries are ongoing and officers are appealing for anyone with information, or relevant dashcam, CCTV or doorbell footage, to come forward.

Tim Cuthbert, Rushcliffe neighbourhood policing inspector, said: “This theft will cause dismay to those involved with the charity and the wider community.

“We’re keen to trace those responsible and investigations are ongoing. I’d urge anyone with information, or relevant dashcam, CCTV or doorbell footage, to get in touch.”
