Police officers chase suspect after assault at city centre bar

A suspect was chased by officers following an assault at a city centre bar.

Police were patrolling Old Market Square in the early hours of Sunday (24 May) when they were flagged down by door staff at a nearby bar.

The door staff reported an assault that had just taken place at a bar in St James’s Street and pointed out a suspect to the officers.

When officers approached the man, he ran off but was successfully detained a short distance away.

The 34-year-old was arrested and taken into custody.

Officers then attended the bar and found two victims receiving treatment from paramedics. Both were taken to hospital.

The suspect was questioned on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent and was bailed with conditions.

Enquiries to establish the full circumstances remain ongoing.

The arrest follows the launch of Operation Reclaim, a partnership approach to relentlessly targeting criminals who use the city centre to commit crime.

Nottinghamshire Police are using the Home Office tactic called Clear, Hold, Build, whereby the environment is made as hostile as possible for criminals to operate in, ensuring the vacuum cannot be filled once they are arrested and charged.

Chief Inspector Kylie Davies, of Nottinghamshire Police, said:

“We launched Operation Reclaim because we are acutely aware of the impact that crime has had on people wanting to come into Nottingham city centre.

“That includes those looking to enjoy a safe night out, and we are committed to working with partners to reduce violence in the night-time economy.

“Nottingham is a vibrant city, and we will not stand for any behaviour that prevents people from being able to enjoy the wonderful nightlife on offer here.

“It’s vital that people feel safe within the city centre, so we will continue patrolling the streets and responding to incidents such as this.

“We are fortunate to have strong partnerships with local businesses and would like to thank the door staff for bringing this incident to our attention.”
