Nottingham Express Transit (NET) is inviting people to discover what a light rail career could offer them at a recruitment open day on Tuesday 15 September.
Taking place at The Forest, attendees will be able to hear first-hand from a range of NET employees about what’s involved in their jobs day-to-day. Roles include tram drivers, customer experience agents, technicians, engineers and cleaners, who all play an important role in delivering a reliable, safe and consistent tram service for the people of Nottingham.
There are currently more than 300 NET employees located at the Wilkinson Street Depot on the outskirts of Nottingham city. The upcoming open day will highlight the diverse range of routes into the light rail industry, demystifying the career pathways available for those entering the industry for the first time.
Tram driver is one of the tram operator’s most popular roles and only requires a valid driving licence to apply, with no previous experience necessary. Successful applicants receive full training over a seven-week programme, providing all the skills needed to begin a career in the driver’s seat.
Alongside the training, there is also a range of employee benefits available, such as free tram travel and a generous employee discount scheme. NET is also passionate about its commitment to local charities and support for employees, with attendees able to hear about the various initiatives that regularly take place throughout the year.

NET’s head of operations and safety, Andy Downie, began his career as a train driver at British Rail before spending twenty years with Nottinghamshire Police and then moving to EMR to work in operations. Andy then brought his wealth of experience and transferable skills to NET, demonstrating how a career in the light rail industry can be shaped by experience from a wide range of backgrounds.
Explaining more, Andy said: “I’ve been at NET now for just shy of a year and I’ve loved getting the chance to work within such a welcoming and hard-working team.
“Over the years, my career journey has seen me work for a range of different employers in a range of different industries, but there really is nothing quite like working in the light rail industry.
