QMC awarded £12.9 million for new same-day emergency care facility

Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham is to receive £12.9 million for a new emergency care facility designed to help patients receive treatment and return home on the same day.

The funding will provide a new Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) facility for patients who can safely be assessed and treated within a day, potentially avoiding an overnight hospital stay.

The allocation was announced by the government on Sunday 18 October as part of almost £140 million for 14 urgent care schemes across England.

The announcement also includes £6.35 million for East Midlands Ambulance Service to provide 40 additional double-crewed ambulances. The government says the investment will increase capacity to respond to 999 calls, particularly during busy periods.

No opening date or construction timetable for the new QMC facility was given in the release.

The national package includes new urgent treatment centres, ambulance provision and improvements to emergency departments, as the NHS prepares for increased demand over winter.

A separate group of 25 new or expanded urgent care sites, announced in April, is also being brought into use for the winter period. These include an expansion of same-day emergency care at Bassetlaw Hospital, which the government lists as already open.

Health and Social Care Secretary Yvette Cooper said the investment followed a particularly busy summer and was intended to support NHS staff in meeting winter demand.

Dr Emma Rowland, NHS Executive Director for Performance and Delivery, said investment in same-day emergency care and urgent treatment centres would help patients access appropriate treatment while reducing pressure on emergency departments.

The government says it is investing almost £2 billion in urgent care capital projects up to 2030, alongside £1.5 billion already confirmed to address urgent maintenance issues across NHS buildings.
