Nottingham council leader ‘deeply shocked’ after police officer shot in city centre

Nottingham City Council leader Neghat Khan has said she is “deeply shocked and saddened” after a police officer sustained a gunshot wound in the city centre this morning.

The officer was taken to hospital with a wound to his foot after approaching two suspects in Angel Row shortly before the incident at 4.50am on Sunday 18 October.

Police said a man and a woman fled the scene and a firearm was recovered. Both suspects remained outstanding at the time of the force’s earlier statement.

A large area around Old Market Square was cordoned off this morning, with crime scene investigation vans at the scene as investigation work began.

St James’s Street was completely cordoned off, while closures on Angel Row and Beastmarket Hill prevented buses from accessing those streets.

Councillor Khan said: “I am deeply shocked and saddened by the news of this morning’s shooting. My thoughts and full support are with the injured police officer, their family, and their colleagues across Nottinghamshire Police.

“Nottingham City Council is working tirelessly alongside the police to support the investigation and ensure those responsible are swiftly caught and brought to justice.

“While incidents of this nature are extremely rare, our commitment to keeping Nottingham safe is absolute. Thanks to the daily bravery of our police and Community Protection Officers, Nottingham remains a safe city, and residents can be assured that every available resource is being deployed.”

Earlier, Assistant Chief Constable Claire Rukas, of Nottinghamshire Police, described the shooting as “a shocking incident and a sobering reminder of the potential dangers faced by officers as they work to protect and serve the public”.

Police have appealed for anyone with information about the incident to come forward.
