A thief who snatched money from a woman at a cash machine has been jailed.
Matthew Butterworth sneaked up on the victim as she withdrew cash in Front Street, Arnold, on 4 June 2026.
He pushed the woman before grabbing £50 and fleeing on a bicycle.
Butterworth is also a persistent nuisance at the Arnold Asda store, in Front Street, committing a series of shop thefts during the past month.
He stole meat in raids on the supermarket on 2, 6 and 12 June.
During the last theft, he was confronted by a member of staff and in the tussle which followed reached for his waistband in a way which suggested he could be carrying a weapon.
Following his arrest by officers from the Gedling Central neighbourhood policing team, Buttwerworth pleaded guilty to four counts of shop theft, theft from a person and threatening behaviour.
At Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday (24 June) the 46-year-old, of Jacoby Close, Arnold, was jailed for 36 weeks.
Sergeant Alison Riley, of the neighbourhood team, said:
“Butterworth is a prolific thief who has targeted this supermarket in order to steal.
“We work closely with shop security teams to identify, arrest and charge persistent offenders like this and I hope this prison sentence gives staff some respite.
“Butterworth is an opportunistic thief and was also quite prepared to grab cash from a woman at a cash machine.”
