Two people have been arrested as part of a police investigation into a large series of attacks on cash machines.
Nottinghamshire Police launched an investigation after a dozen incidents were reported in the county in June this year.
Inquiries led to the reports being linked to a significant number of other attacks on cash machines in other parts of the UK, including Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Greater Manchester, Yorkshire and Scotland.
It is believed approximately 250 attacks were carried out between May and July, whereby cash dispensers were jammed and the cash collected hours later by the offender.
Many thousands of pounds were stolen.
As part of the investigation, a warrant was executed by Nottinghamshire Police officers at an address in Barnsley on Wednesday morning (2 August). Two men, aged 31 and 34, were arrested on suspicion of theft and going equipped for theft and were transported to Nottingham for questioning.
They remain in police custody.
Police Staff Investigator Jodie Ridgewell, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “Cash machine thefts have a significant impact on victims and we are determined to bring those responsible to justice.
“These arrests reflect the seriousness in which we treat this type of organised offending and the level at which police forces can collaborate in order to protect communities.
“We will continue to work closely with our policing colleagues to fully understand the extent of these ATM attacks so that appropriate action can be taken.”
