Arrests after suspected arson attack on former nursing home

Two men have been arrested by police investigating a fire in a former nursing home.

Emergency services attended the former Abbeymoor Nursing Home, in Sherwood Road, Worksop, after reports of the blaze at around 4.20 am on Sunday (19 February 2023).

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service used six fire engines, an aerial ladder platform and a water bowser to bring the fire under control and police closed nearby roads.

Two men, aged 27 and 33, were arrested on suspicion of arson after attending Bassetlaw Hospital. The 27-year-old suffered injuries which are currently believed to be potentially life-threatening.

A joint police and fire investigation will begin into the cause of the fire on Monday and detectives want to hear from anyone with information.

Detective Inspector Simon Harrison, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “We have arrested two suspects in connection with this incident, but our inquiries are at a very early stage and a full investigation into the cause of the fire will now take place.

“We would ask anyone who saw what happened, or has any further information, to contact us immediately.

“Due to extensive fire damage, emergency services are still working on the building to make it safe, however a detailed search cannot take place.

“Should anyone have any concerns around unaccounted for people in the local area, please contact police via 101 or the live chat service, quoting incident number 555 of 18 February 2023, or by contacting Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
