A thief who stole a child’s birthday presents after breaking into cars in Netherfield has been jailed.
Amy Bird was captured on CCTV footage entering vehicles parked in Cross Street and Manvers Street during the early hours of 11 June 2026.
One of the victims reported that cash, a spare car key and sunglasses were among the items missing.
The owner of the other vehicle discovered the following morning that birthday presents for her daughter, including a dance mat and Barbie toys, had been taken.
Bird was identified as the offender by officers when they viewed the footage.
She was arrested, charged and went on to plead guilty to two counts of theft from a motor vehicle.
The 39-year-old, of no fixed abode, also admitted one count of shop theft after stealing laundry products and butter from the Co-op store on Mansfield Road on 30 May.
At Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on Saturday (4 July), she was jailed for a total of 46 weeks.
Inspector Steven King, local area commander for Gedling, said:
“We know vehicle crime has been a concern for residents in the Netherfield area, so this jail sentence is very welcome.
“We saw an increase in reports of this nature earlier in the year, and this was an important arrest.
“Bird was identified from CCTV footage by officers from another neighbourhood team, so I’m grateful their knowledge has led to this outcome in court.
“Additional patrols in the area, alongside educating residents about how to avoid becoming a victim of vehicle crime, will continue.”
