Bulwell man jailed for repeated harassment of neighbour

A Bulwell man has been jailed after making his neighbour’s life a misery.

Christopher Brealey repeatedly harassed a woman living next door to him over several weeks.

He subjected her to verbal abuse that even extended to him making multiple threats to kill her.

Those violent threats weren’t isolated but came as part of a campaign of harassment in and around Highbury Road.

Brealey regularly shouted abuse at his neighbour and made attempts to intimidate her with his aggressive behaviour.

He also blasted loud music through the day and night and banged on the walls while shouting abuse during the early hours.

Brealey’s offending took place between 30 November and Tuesday (13 January) – when he was arrested by neighbourhood officers.

Unbeknownst to the 57-year-old, his neighbour had been documenting the harassment as it was happening and filming footage.

The evidence she’d gathered played a key role in helping the Bulwell Neighbourhood Policing team take further action against Brealey.

This included securing a charge of harassment without violence, while work is also ongoing with the housing agency to revoke his tenancy too.

Brealey, of Highbury Road, Bulwell, pleaded guilty to the charge during an appearance at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday (14 January).

He was sentenced that same day to five months in prison, while he also received a two-year restraining order banning him from contacting his victim.

Sergeant Katie Taylor, of the Bulwell Neighbourhood Policing team, said:

“I’d firstly like to highlight the bravery of the victim, whose persistent gathering of evidence helped build a watertight case against Brealey.

“All that footage played a key role in helping us secure a charge in this case, while it also meant he had no choice but to admit what he’d done.

“Brealey’s aggressive and unpleasant actions over time amounted to harassment and caused a great level of distress to those he targeted.

“This type of behaviour can have a really negative impact on people’s lives and how they feel about where they live, which is simply not okay.

“We’re pleased to see Brealey has been sent to prison, while we’re in the process of working with the housing agency to revoke his tenancy to provide residents with some more respite.”
