Two suspects were tracked down by a police dog after a stolen moped was abandoned.
Police were called in the early hours of Saturday morning (11 October) after the moped was taken from an address on Clifton Boulevard.
Police said:
‘We located the vehicle a short time later and attempted to pull it over.
‘However, the rider failed to stop and continued along a canal towpath before abandoning the bike near Lenton Lane and fleeing on foot with his passenger.
‘PD Gibbs was called in to assist with the search and quickly led his handler along the path toward an industrial estate on Willow Road.
‘Gibbs, a young Belgian Malinois licensed as a police dog in July, then guided his handler toward a tree line.
‘As they approached the trees, two suspects emerged and surrendered.
‘Two boys, aged 15 and 13, have been charged with theft and attempted theft.
The older boy has also been charged with driving without a licence and using a vehicle without insurance.
‘The younger boy has additionally been charged with arson in connection with an incident in July.
Sergeant Nicholas Dachtler, of our dog section, said: “Gibbs is still a young dog but did an excellent job in leading his handler to these two suspects.
“He and our other general-purpose dogs are trained to detect and follow a scent in order to find people and property, so in situations like this they really are invaluable.”
