Driver sentenced after crashing into Nottingham shop

A fleeing driver was caught by a police dog after crashing through the front of a building.

Nathan Thiongo, 33, was pulled over by police officers at 4.40am on 27 December after being spotted driving erratically.

After initially complying and stopping on Ilkeston Road, Thiongo performed a U-turn and sped off towards Wollaton Road.

As he approached the junction with Middleton Boulevard, he lost control and crashed through the front of a nail bar.

Thiongo was then seen running from the wreckage and heading towards nearby gardens in the darkness.

PD Santo, who had joined the pursuit with his handler, was deployed on his tracking line and soon caught up with Thiongo in the garden of a nearby house.

Thiongo, of Earls Close, Wollaton, blew over the alcohol limit at the roadside and later failed to provide an evidential sample in custody.

He said he panicked after the first stop when an officer approached his passenger-side window.

He appeared at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court two days later, where he pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, failing to stop, and failing to provide a specimen for analysis.

He was given a 12-month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, and banned from driving for two years. If he is to drive again, he must pass an extended retest.

Inspector Chris Chell said: “Thiongo is lucky that nobody was seriously hurt or worse as a result of his actions.

“By speeding away from officers in the way he did, he put other road users in danger and caused considerable damage to a local business.

“Thanks to the exceptional nose of PD Santo and the excellent work of our Operational Support officers, his attempts to avoid justice didn’t last long and he was soon in cuffs.”
