Suspected stolen moped riders stopped by police at M1 services

The rider of a suspected stolen moped was boxed in by pursuing officers, brought safely to the ground and arrested.

He was among a group of riders spotted near the M1 on two mopeds by an off-duty officer during the early hours of 19 July.

Several police units were deployed to Trowell Services, where officers quickly intercepted one of the bikes after it was abandoned.

The second moped was ridden away through the Cockington Road estate towards Woodhouse Way, where officers carried out a two-car boxing manoeuvre a short time later.

After coming to a stop, the rider was knocked to the ground as he attempted to drive away.

Following a brief foot chase, the 17-year-old was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, failing to stop, driving without a licence, driving without insurance and possession of cannabis.

He has since been released on police bail pending further enquiries.

Inspector Chris Chell, of Nottinghamshire Police, said:

“Stolen mopeds and other motorcycles are often used in the commission of other offences, which is why we take robust action whenever we encounter them.

“Thanks to the actions of an off-duty officer and the skill of our advanced drivers, two bikes were recovered and a suspect was safely taken into custody.”
