Shoppers and visitors could receive three hours of free parking in council-owned car parks across Broxtowe throughout December under proposals going before councillors.
Broxtowe Borough Council’s Cabinet will consider the scheme when it meets on Tuesday 29 September.
If approved, the parking incentive would run from 1 December until 31 December 2026.
It would apply across the council’s car parks, with the exception of Technology Drive and Station Road in Beeston. The council said those two sites mainly serve people using the railway station.
Drivers using participating car parks would still need to obtain a free ticket from a parking machine. The ticket would cover the first three hours, with the usual charges applying after that period.
According to the council report, retaining the ticket system would allow parking officers to monitor use of the car parks and help prevent commuters from using the scheme to obtain free all-day parking.
Broxtowe Borough Council has previously offered free three-hour parking during the Christmas period. The equivalent scheme in 2025/26 resulted in a net reduction of around £11,200 in parking income, as well as a one-off cost of £2,100 to reconfigure the ticket machines.
There is currently no specific budget provision for the proposed 2026 scheme. However, the report states that a similar reduction in income and any additional cost would be met from existing council budgets.
The proposal is classed as a key decision because it would affect more than two council wards.
Cabinet members are being recommended to approve the incentive, but no final decision has yet been made.
