Gritters out tonight as freezing temperatures return

Nottinghamshire County Council gritters are out again tonight from 6:30 pm.

A spokesperson for the authority said:

‘Road temperatures are forecast to be as low as -2.9 with freezing from 2am to 4am so please travel safely and take extra care. There is also mention of ice in the forecast.’

‘Frost and ice are forecast, so make sure to drive to the conditions and take care out there.

‘We’re really proud of our gritting teams who work hard to keep you safe late into the night and if you’re thinking ‘well, I’ve not seen them come down my street and it’s icy so I think they’ve missed us out,’ it’s important to remember a few key things about gritting:

‘Each run can take between three and four hours, meaning that it could be much later than the time that we tell you the gritters go out that they reach your area/street.

‘We don’t miss out roads on our routes. Whether it’s main routes or snow routes, we always grit the same roads on these routes unless exceptional circumstances mean that we can’t access them.

‘Gritting doesn’t melt all ice. Gritters spreading grit on the road is only the start of the de-icing process. Movement of grit around the road by traffic is essential to complete the process. When traffic levels are low, roads can remain icy for some time.’
