A 23-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of smuggling drugs into the UK.
Border Force officials contacted Nottinghamshire Police after intercepting a parcel containing 660 grams of cannabis at Heathrow Airport on 5 December 2024.
The parcel – which was addressed to a flat in Nottingham – had been exported from Thailand and was declared as containing rain cover bags.
However checks found it contained a green herbal substance that gave a strong smell, with tests determining it to be cannabis.
An investigation was launched and Nottinghamshire Police put measures in place to monitor other parcels being sent to the intended recipient.
On 18 December, a second parcel addressed to the suspect was intercepted and seized by officers. The contents were examined by a drug expert, who found the package contained 543 grams of cannabis.
Police arrested the intended recipient after locating him in Russell Street, Arboretum, on Saturday (8 February). He was questioned on suspicion of possession with intent to supply and conspiracy to supply Class B drugs and later bailed pending further investigation work.
PC Ashley Smith, who is leading the investigation, said:
“We are determined to do everything possible, working with partners like UK Border Force, to prevent illegal drugs from hitting our streets and causing harm in our communities.
“Hopefully this arrest will serve as a warning to others that we will not hesitate to take action whenever drugs are imported into Nottinghamshire.
