Iguazu plea as store at risk of closure after West Bridgford and Newark stores shut

A long-standing independent business has issued an urgent plea for support after warning it is at risk of closing after 24 years.

Iguazu also confirmed the closure of its West Bridgford shop in Gordon Road.

Iguazu, an independent Fair Trade store which imports directly from Thailand, said its original shop in Beeston is now facing an uncertain future following the closure of its Newark and West Bridgford branches in recent months.

The business said losing two of its three stores, along with members of its team, had been “heartbreaking” and that it is now trying to protect the remaining Beeston shop.

Iguazu began as a small independent retail business and grew into three stores through local support over more than two decades. The business said it has relied on the loyalty of customers and the wider community throughout that time.

In a message to customers, the business said: “After 24 amazing years, Iguazu Beeston is now at real risk of closing forever unless we can turn things around — and we urgently need your help.”

The store is now asking people to support it by visiting the Beeston shop and shopping locally.

As part of efforts to keep the business open, Iguazu is holding what it describes as the biggest sale in its history, with 20 per cent off all full-price items and up to 50 per cent off selected lines.

The business said every purchase would make a difference at a difficult time for independent retailers, with high street businesses continuing to face rising costs, changing shopping habits and pressure from online retail.

The statement added: “Independent businesses are disappearing from our high streets every day. We are doing everything we can to stop Iguazu becoming another one lost forever.”

Iguazu said the situation had been personally devastating, but that it still believed in the business and the community support which helped it grow over the past 24 years.
