Man charged after series of shop thefts in Nottingham city

A man has appeared in court charged in connection with a series of thefts from shops in and around Nottingham city centre.

Bottles of prosecco were among the items taken from shops in Ilkeston Road, Radford; the Victoria Centre; Derby Road, Lenton and Waverley Street, the Arboretum, between 26 May and 29 June.

In one incident a security guard was allegedly assaulted causing him to suffer a cut to his nose and grazes to the back of his head.

Michael Roberts, 52, of no fixed address, appeared at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on Friday (2 July) charged with three counts of theft, three counts of breaching a criminal behaviour order and a further count of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

He was remanded in custody and is next due to appear at Nottingham Crown Court on 30 July 2021.Detective Sergeant Frank Guddemi said: “Shop theft is totally unacceptable and we will always take action against offenders.

“Incidents like these not only harm businesses financially, but they can also be incredibly distressing for staff within the stores.

“In one of these alleged cases violence was used against a security guard as he carried out his job which is an atrocious act.

“Thankfully his injuries were not serious and I’m glad that our quick and thorough enquiries resulted in a man being arrested and charged in connection with these crimes.”
