Man charged with rape after Nottingham city incident – witness appeal

Detectives investigating a serious sexual assault in Nottingham city centre have asked for additional witnesses to come forward.

Police were called shortly before 12.30am on Thursday 17 April after a homeless woman was assaulted by a man in Lister Gate.

The report was made via a third party out of concern for the victim and a suspect was arrested at the scene.

A 48-year-old man from Basford was charged with rape and remanded into custody. He  is next due to appear at Nottingham Crown Court on Wednesday 28 May.

Detectives remain keen to speak to any witnesses who are yet to come forward.

Detective Constable Abi Dorricott, of Nottinghamshire Police, said:

“This was a distressing incident for the victim and I am pleased we have been able to charge a suspect.

“Despite this, our investigation remains open and we would still like to hear from any additional witnesses who saw or heard anything.

“It is vital that we hear directly from every person who saw this incident unfold. Even the smallest piece of information could prove vital in this investigation.”
