A man is ‘lucky to be alive’ after he was driven into following a road rage incident which resulted in him being crushed between a van and a lorry.
The victim was driving his van along the A610 Kimberley bypass, near Junction 26 of the M1, before a lorry approached him from the rear and got close to the back of him.
The lorry driver, 42-year-old Nicholas Green, started to flash his headlights and gestured for the van to move over into the left hand lane so that it could pass.
The van driver moved over but, as he did, Green moved his lorry left in an effort to undertake him too.
An argument started as they reached the roundabout side-by-side where the A610 joins the M1.
They continued to argue before the 48-year-old victim got out of his van and approached the lorry driver’s side door resulting him being pinned between the van and the lorry.
Green, of Filey Street, Bulwell, then drove away from the scene.
Other motorists came to the victim’s aid and called the emergency services before he was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.
They included a shattered pelvis, broken ribs, broken collarbones and a punctured lung.
He needed to have a number of operations.
The road rage incident happened at about 3pm on 31 October 2018.
The A610 was closed Nottingham bound while emergency services were in attendance and following enquiries police arrested Green later that day.
He went on to plead guilty to a charge of causing serious injury by dangerous driving on Thursday (12 November) at Nottingham Crown Court and was sentenced to 24 months imprisonment suspended for 18 months.
Green was also disqualified from driving with an extended retest requirement.
Detective Constable Nathan Fagan, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “Fortunately, incidents like this are rare but the victim is lucky to be alive after being crushed against his van.
I’d like to thank all those who helped him at the scene and also the witnesses who came forward.
“Dangerous driving incidents will not be tolerated in Nottinghamshire and we will do everything we can to bring offenders before the courts.”
