Man on roof arrested for eleven offences after two-hour standoff

A suspect was talked down from a roof and arrested for 11 offences by officers investigating a burglary in Bilborough.

Policing teams engaged with the individual for around two hours in Wigman Road before he eventually agreed to climb down.

Officers were initially called to a property on the same road after hearing it was being burgled, around 3.20pm on Thursday (15 May).

One suspect was detained at the scene with a backpack containing a money box, while another man was seen to flee towards Harvey Hadden Sports Centre.

Following a short foot chase, the individual climbed onto the roof of an abandoned building, with Tactical Support Group (TSG) and response officers, along with the drone team and negotiators eventually convincing him to come down.

Two men, aged 38 and 56, were both initially arrested on suspicion of burglary.

Further checks then revealed the 38-year-old was also a suspect in three more break-ins and three other theft offences across different parts of Nottingham.

He was subsequently arrested as a suspect in four burglaries, along with two attempted thefts from a vehicle, taking a vehicle without the owner’s consent, causing criminal damage, failing to stop after a road traffic collision, and driving without a licence or valid insurance.

Detective Sergeant Kate Hyde, of Nottinghamshire Police, said:

“The officers involved in this double arrest did a great job responding to these reports so quickly, and for ensuring a safe resolution to this incident.

“After detaining one suspect at the scene of a reported break-in, a second suspect was also identified and eventually arrested after a lengthy period trying to convince them to come down from a roof.

“Thankfully for everyone involved and thanks to the efforts of the teams on the day, this was done safely, while the individual – who was also identified as a suspect in ten other offences – was arrested for those too.”
