The track, located on the Ilkeston Road Recreation Ground, will be a fun and safe mini-road network on which to learn and practice cycling safely.
It will feature 600 metres of 3 metre-wide tarmac pathways for cycling and walking, a 200-metre network of mini roads, including road markings, zebra crossings, solar-powered traffic lights and a roundabout, in addition to a range of road signs.
It is being funded through the Stapleford Towns Fund’s £4.6m Safer Cycling Scheme which aims to create a joined-up transport network that enables more people to travel sustainably through three key projects:
- Phase 1 – The opening of the Stapleford Cycle Hubalso on the Ilkeston Road Recreation Ground in October to provide free bicycle repairs, servicing and cycling advice to local people.
- Phase 2 – The Cycle Training Track – due to open in April – for cycling practice and confidence building.
- Phase 3 – The creation of 3km of new cycle paths around the town
Towns Fund Board Member and Broxtowe MP, Darren Henry, said:
“This fantastic new Cycle Training Track is the next exciting part of our commitment to improving cycling facilities here in Broxtowe.
“The benefits of active travel are huge – it is great for your physical and mental health, as well as the environment. In my day we had cycling proficiency, which I myself benefited from in my youth, it is now time that its successor, Bikeability, helps people here in Broxtowe.
“The success of the Cycle Hub has proven the local appetite for active travel and I cannot wait for people to start enjoying this fun local resource this Spring.”
The design is based on Nottingham City Council’s successful training track at Victoria Embankment.
