“When someone in your family is diagnosed with dementia, you may not know what they need or who to talk to,” says Sharon Grocock, one of the two Alzheimer’s Society community development coordinators in Nottinghamshire.
Following the growing success of the Bassetlaw Dementia Hub, set up over two years ago, Sharon and Hazel are keen to expand the hub network over the county and, in conjunction with Hamberley Homes, launched the Edwalton Dementia Hub, which was opened on 5th February by James Naish, MP for Rushcliffe.
Held monthly at Edwalton Manor Care Home, people caring for those affected by dementia meet helpful contacts at the hub, such as the Carers Federation, Alzheimer’s Society and local social prescribers. Each hub also offers an information session with topics such as ‘Going on Holiday with Dementia’ or ‘Keeping Active and Involved’ for attendees, should they be interested. A full programme is available from Edwalton Manor on 0115 773 8374.
Most importantly, they also meet people in similar situations in a welcoming environment with free refreshments and lunch. This social aspect is so important for carers, who are often isolated in their caring role, and for whom the opportunity to get out for a couple of hours can make a big difference to their own wellbeing.
The Edwalton hub runs from 11 am–1 pm on the first Thursday of each month. Anyone is welcome to drop in or may be referred by their local surgery or other services,” says Hazel. You do not need to book, and we offer a welcoming and supportive environment to both relax and discuss support needed.
