Nine drivers fined on 20 mph road after residents’ concerns

Nine motorists were pulled over by officers in high-vis when a speed gun showed they were driving too fast.

Each of the stops were made within 45 minutes, after neighbourhood officers set themselves up in Lambourne Drive.

The location was chosen by the policing team following numerous resident complaints of people exceeding the 20mph limit.

Those reports would turn out to be accurate, as a stream of cars were clocked travelling closer to the 30mph mark during the quick-fire op.

Officers duly responded to this by halting the nine drivers and giving each of them some advice at the roadside, last Thursday (5 March) morning.

“We selected Lambourne Drive for our latest speeding op for the simple reason that it was flagged as a concern by the public,” said Sergeant Daniel Sheasby.

“Those reports would go on to be proven right as it turned out, with nine drivers stopped in under 45 minutes for going too fast.

“With it being a 20mph zone, we pulled over anybody travelling over 25mph and gave them a little bit of advice about their speed.

“While we obviously can issue tickets for excess speeding as well, we fortunately didn’t need to do so on this occasion.

“The main goal of this is to keep people safe. We’re not there to ruin anyone’s day – we just want to make everyone safer on the roads.”

Road safety was recently chosen as the City West area’s new policing priority, which prompted Sgt Sheasby and the rest of the team to conduct last week’s operation.

In addition to looking out for speeding motorists, the neighbourhood officers were also on hand to provide a visible presence and speak to members of the community.

“We had some really good feedback from the residents who approached us after seeing us out in our high-vis jackets,” added Sgt Sheasby.

“They said they appreciated us being there conducting the operation and gave us a bit of advice around what sort of times they’d like to see us there again.

“We can absolutely look to do that in upcoming speeding ops, which we will be doing more of, especially while road safety is our policing priority for City West.

“As I’ve said, we were there in Lambourne Drive in response to what residents and local councillors have asked us to do, so please rest assured all your feedback does get to us.”
