Nottingham deer given brewers’ grain as extreme weather affects grass supplies

Deer at Wollaton Hall and Deer Park have been given a temporary change in diet after recent extreme weather affected grass supplies.

Nottingham City Council’s parks team said it had needed to find an additional food supplement for the animals until autumn, when sweet chestnuts and acorns will begin to fall naturally across the park.

The team contacted local independent breweries to ask whether they had any brewers’ grain available. The material is a by-product of the brewing process and provides the deer with a rich source of digestible protein and fibre.

Nottinghamshire-based Blue Monkey Brewery responded to the request and is now helping to ensure the herd has additional food until the natural autumn supply becomes available.

Visitors have been reminded not to feed or approach the deer themselves. The animals are wild and people should remain at least 50 metres away from them while visiting the park.
