Nottingham traffic and travel updates: Friday 16 October

Emergency gas works on London Road continue to affect Nottingham bus services this morning, while severe congestion warnings remain in place around Maid Marian Way and the Broad Marsh demolition works.

Overnight closures continue on Western Boulevard, Stapleford Road in Trowell and Tamworth Road in Long Eaton.

For rail passengers, East Midlands Railway’s reduced Intercity timetable remains in operation, while major engineering works will disrupt East Coast Main Line services through Newark and Retford on Sunday 18 October.

Roads and motorways

M1, A1, A46 and A52

No major new collision or emergency closure affecting Nottinghamshire’s strategic road network has been confirmed in the available early reports.

However, the live National Highways incident feed could not be independently verified across the entire M1, A1, A46 and A52 network at 06:07.

The absence of a confirmed incident should not be interpreted as confirmation that every route is clear.

The principal verified restrictions are planned roadworks, including overnight closures on the A52 around Derby and continuing works on Nottingham’s major routes.

Motorists can check National Highways live traffic updates and Nottingham Travelwise.

A52 – overnight closures around M1 junction 25

Motorists travelling between Nottingham and Derby face further planned overnight restrictions.

National Highways-derived traffic information lists closures on the A52 westbound around M1 junction 25, Spondon and Raynesway.

The restrictions include:

  • A52 westbound access from the M1 junction 25 roundabout.
  • A52 westbound exit slip road at Spondon.
  • The link from the A52 westbound to the A5111 southbound at Raynesway.

The current overnight restrictions were scheduled to finish at 06:00 this morning.

Further closures are listed from 20:00 tonight until 06:00 Saturday 17 October.

These are planned maintenance restrictions rather than incidents. The listed times are forecasts and may change.

A52 Wheatcroft – current phase scheduled to finish

Lane restrictions associated with the Wheatcroft and Nottingham Knight junction improvement programme have been listed through Friday 16 October.

The works affect the A52 around the A606 and A6011 junctions.

Today is the advertised completion date for the current phase, although removal of the traffic management has not been independently confirmed.

The scheme remains relevant to drivers travelling between Gamston, Ruddington, West Bridgford and the A46.

Maid Marian Way

The demolition of the former Broad Marsh NCP car park remains a significant source of disruption in Nottingham city centre.

Traffic continues to operate through the temporary contraflow on Maid Marian Way, with restricted road capacity and temporary traffic signals.

Nottingham City Transport continues to warn that the works have caused severe congestion across the city centre and surrounding roads.

The operator’s current service notice says all services are experiencing severe delays and short-notice cancellations.

This is a continuing network-wide warning rather than confirmation of individual cancellations this morning. Nottingham City Transport

Nottingham buses – emergency gas works on London Road

Emergency gas works on London Road in Nottingham remain listed on NCT’s current service updates page.

The operator says congestion is building along Lower Parliament Street near the Motorpoint Arena, with traffic queuing back from the works.

The disruption affects Lilac and Red Line services.

Affected routes are Lilac 25, 25B, 26 and 27, together with Red 43, 44, 44A, 45 and 45B.

The warning was introduced on Wednesday 14 October and remains active.

NCT has not provided a completion date in the notice.

Passengers travelling between the city centre, Carlton, Gedling and other areas served by these routes should allow additional time.

NCT current service updates

Maid Marian Way – Orange and Turquoise diversions

NCT’s substantial city-centre bus diversions remain in operation.

Orange 34/C services enter Nottingham from Canning Circus along Talbot Street, continuing to Nottingham Trent University City Campus before terminating on Milton Street alongside Victoria Centre.

Outbound services towards University Park depart from the Orange 35 and 36 stops on Milton Street.

Turquoise 77/C, 78/A/B and 79/B services operate via Talbot Street, Shakespeare Street and North Church Street before terminating on Burton Street alongside The Cornerhouse.

Outbound journeys towards Strelley and Bulwell begin at Burton Street stop T7.

The changes avoid several stops around Maid Marian Way, Broad Marsh, George Street and Fletcher Gate.

Red 45/B passengers should also note that the Maid Marian Way stop near The Salutation remains closed. The alternative is stop M2 outside Nottingham Lighting Centre.

NCT says the temporary arrangements will remain until the demolition works are complete. Tollerton – final scheduled day of temporary lights

Temporary two-way traffic lights remain scheduled on Melton Road in Tollerton, near the A52 junction.

The restrictions have been operating since Monday 12 October and are scheduled to finish today.

Trentbarton says the lights are removed overnight and reinstated during the day.

The operator warns that delays are possible on the keyworth service.

Motorists travelling between Tollerton, Keyworth and the A52 should allow additional time while the works remain in place.

Western Boulevard – overnight closures continue

Overnight resurfacing works continue on Western Boulevard towards Queen’s Medical Centre and Clifton.

NCT’s current notice covers closures from Wednesday 14 to Friday 23 October inclusive.

Grey 53 services are affected.

The weekday departures from Arnold at 05:10 and 19:05 divert via Nuthall Road and Aspley Lane before returning to Western Boulevard.

The diversion means the Newlyn Drive and Western Boulevard/Bluecoat School stops towards Clifton cannot be served by those journeys.

The restrictions are part of Nottingham City Council’s resurfacing programme.

Trowell – Stapleford Road closes again tonight

Overnight closures continue on Stapleford Road in Trowell.

Trentbarton confirms that the road is scheduled to close tonight, Friday 16 October, between 20:00 and 06:00.

Further closures are planned for Monday 19 and Tuesday 20 October.

The works affect my15 services.

During the closures, buses cannot serve Trowell Road, Trowell Grove, Warehouse or Derbyshire Avenue stops in either direction.

Passengers travelling between Ilkeston, Trowell and Long Eaton should check their journeys before travelling tonight.

Long Eaton – Tamworth Road overnight closures

Overnight closures remain in operation around Tamworth Road, Harrington Bridge and Old Sawley.

The restrictions operate between 22:00 and 06:00 on working nights until Friday 23 October.

Trentbarton’s skylink Nottingham and selected my15 services are affected.

Skylink Nottingham diverts via Draycott Road, the M1 and A50.

Stops including Draycott Road, Sawley Square and Sawley Marina cannot be served during the relevant diversion.

The restrictions are scheduled to return tonight.

Pinxton – road temporarily reopened

There is a change to the previously announced closure of Kirkby Lane in Pinxton.

Trentbarton issued an update on Thursday 15 October confirming that the road has temporarily reopened.

The operator says its 9.3 and 90 services have returned to their normal routes between 15 and 20 October.

The closure is scheduled to resume after 20 October while Severn Trent Water continues installing a new water main.

The wider programme remains scheduled until December.

This means the earlier diversion should not be carried forward as current disruption this morning.

National Rail says the reduced timetable remains in operation until further notice while EMR addresses train performance and reliability problems.

These include replacing almost 670 metres of rail near Newark, drainage renewal at Grantham, brickwork repairs at Stoke Tunnel and electrical work near Balderton.

LNER services

London North Eastern Railway will operate a reduced timetable.

An hourly service will run between Scotland and London King’s Cross, with one service every two hours between Leeds and London.

Rail replacement coaches will connect passengers from Retford, Newark Northgate and Grantham with Doncaster and Peterborough.

There will also be no LNER services to or from Lincoln, with replacement coaches operating between Peterborough, Grantham and Lincoln.
