A major fire in Nottingham city centre is the dominant travel issue this morning, with emergency crews still at the scene on Market Street.
Several central roads have been closed and tram services have been unable to operate through the heart of the city. The disruption comes on top of the continuing Maid Marian Way demolition traffic management.
Away from the city centre, no major fresh incident causing widespread disruption has been identified on Nottinghamshire’s strategic M1, A1, A46 or A52 routes in the early check. A significant programme of overnight works around A52 Clifton Bridge and Silverdale continues tonight.
Nottingham city centre fire – roads closed
Firefighters remain at the scene of a major fire at a residential property on Market Street this morning.
The incident began on Monday night, with 12 fire engines sent to the scene.
Road closures were put in place on:
- Upper Parliament Street
- Lower Parliament Street
- Market Street
- King Street
- Queen Street
An update early this morning said crews remain at the scene and are likely to be there for several more hours
This has the potential to cause substantial disruption to the Tuesday morning peak, particularly around Theatre Royal, Old Market Square, Upper Parliament Street and the Victoria Centre approaches.
Trams – city centre services disrupted
The fire has also caused significant disruption to Nottingham Express Transit.
Trams were stopped in both directions between Theatre Royal and Old Market Square because of the emergency response on Monday night.
With firefighters still at the scene this morning, passengers should not assume normal through-running across the city centre until NET confirms the restriction has been lifted.
This is separate from the Goose Fair industrial action, which has now finished.
Buses – city-centre fire adds another complication
The emergency road closures around Market Street and Upper Parliament Street are likely to affect city-centre bus movements this morning.
This comes while operators are already managing the effects of the Maid Marian Way demolition works.
Nottingham City Transport has permanent temporary arrangements in place to keep Orange and Turquoise services away from the worst of the Maid Marian Way disruption.
Orange 34/C and Turquoise 77/C, 78/A/B and 79/B have altered city-centre stopping arrangements designed to avoid the demolition area and improve reliability.
Given this morning’s additional closures around Upper Parliament Street, passengers should expect the possibility of further short-notice diversions.
Maid Marian Way
The Maid Marian Way contraflow remains in place for demolition of the former Broad Marsh NCP car park.
Traffic continues to operate through a substantially reduced road layout, and the works caused severe congestion and lengthy bus delays last week.
The Market Street fire now removes or restricts several alternative routes through the northern side of the city centre, so the combined effect is particularly worth watching as commuter traffic increases.
Roads and motorways
The early strategic-road check has not identified a major fresh incident causing widespread disruption on Nottinghamshire’s M1, A1, A46 or A52.
Current National Highways-derived East Midlands traffic information is principally showing planned works rather than a major Nottinghamshire motorway incident.
That picture could change rapidly once the morning peak builds, but at 06:08 the Nottingham city-centre fire is considerably more significant than the strategic-road picture.
A52 Clifton Bridge – overnight works continue
The second night of a major National Highways programme takes place tonight around A52 Clifton Bridge.
High-mast lighting works are running from 5 to 13 October, generally between 20:00 and 06:00. Tonight, the A453 northbound to A52 westbound link is scheduled to close, including the Silverdale Island entry slip.
Drivers will also be unable to turn right into Silverdale.
One lane of the A52 eastbound between Queens Drive Roundabout and Silverdale will be closed. The same arrangements apply again on Wednesday night.
On Thursday 8 October, the A52 Queens Drive Flyover closes overnight from 20:00 to 06:00, although Queens Drive Island itself remains open.
West Bridgford – Gordon Road
The gas-main replacement works on Gordon Road in West Bridgford continue today.
NCT Green 5/A, 6 and 12/C/E towards Nottingham are diverted until Friday 16 October.
Green 5/A diverts from Brockley Road via Davies Road and Radcliffe Road to Trent Bridge.
Green 6 uses Stamford Road, Melton Road, Musters Road, Rectory Road and Central Avenue.
Green 12/C/E remains on Radcliffe Road to Trent Bridge.
The works are particularly significant because they affect one of the principal routes between central West Bridgford and Trent Bridge.
Ryehill Street
The Ryehill Street bus stop towards Trent Bridge remains closed for roadworks.
The closure affects Navy, Green and Pathfinder 90 services, with passengers directed to the next stop at Victoria Embankment.
Nuthall Road – closure tonight
The major resurfacing programme on Nuthall Road continues tonight.
Phase two operates on weekday evenings between 19:00 and 06:00 until Wednesday 14 October.
Yellow 71/B towards Bulwell diverts via Bagnall Road.
Turquoise 79/B towards Bulwell and Arnold uses Melbourne Road, Aspley Lane and Broxtowe Lane, while city-bound journeys use the reverse diversion. Turquoise buses do not stop on the diversion.
Derby Road
Continuing roadworks on Derby Road are causing delays to NCT 18, Orange 34/C, 35/A/B, 36 and University hopper 903.
The Triumph Road stop towards Nottingham is closed.
Loughborough – South Notts 1
Passengers on South Notts 1 continue to face delays because of roadworks in Loughborough.
NCT says the delays can be severe at peak times.
Rail – reduced EMR timetable continues
There is no major fresh rail incident identified affecting Nottingham station in the early check, but the long-running reduced timetable on East Midlands Railway Intercity services remains in operation.
National Rail updated the notice on Monday 5 October and says the temporary reduced timetable affects services between Sheffield, Nottingham and Derby and London St Pancras.
It remains in place until further notice while EMR addresses train performance and reliability issues.
For weekdays, cancelled services have currently been removed from journey planners through Friday 16 October.
Lowdham
Long-term construction continues at Lowdham Roundabout as part of the A614/A6097 improvement programme.
The scheme includes additional circulatory and approach lanes, with temporary signals and reduced lanes required during different construction phases. Drivers are being advised to allow additional time. Nottingham Standard
