Nottinghamshire house closed down because of ASB and drug activity

A tenant is facing eviction because of repeated antisocial and criminal behaviour at their home on Kirkby-in-Ashfield’s Coxmoor estate.

Magistrates have approved a ‘closure order’ for the address following a joint application by Ashfield District Council’s Community Safety Team and Nottinghamshire Police.

It followed reports of ASB, violence and illegal drug activity linked to the house, which is owned and rented out by Ashfield District Council.

The closure order prohibits access to the premises by everyone (including the tenant and other residents).

It has since been followed by a successful application by Ashfield District Council of a possession notice, meaning the tenant will now be evicted.

The move is one of several successful measures being used to combat antisocial behaviour across the District.

Last month (March) ADC and Nottinghamshire Police began a joint crackdown to disrupt ASB and criminal activity on Hucknall’s Broomhill Road estate.

Reports of antisocial behaviour across Ashfield have fallen by 35 per cent over the last two years.

Antonio Taylor, Community Safety Manager at ADC, said:

“We know the misery caused to local communities by those who believe the law doesn’t apply to them.

“This property was the source of antisocial and criminal behaviour and we and Nottinghamshire Police have acted swiftly to put an end to that.

“We have invested significantly into the Coxmoor estate and wider District areas through external funding to make our streets safer.

“This includes new and improved CCTV, additional street lighting, signage, education programmes, and diversionary activities to address antisocial behaviour and improve feelings of safety.”

Inspector Chris Boylin, Ashfield Neighbourhood Policing Inspector added:

“This highlights the important role the community plays in informing us where the problems that affect them are. Through the information they have provided, we have been able to take action and then work with our partners to take steps in improving things for those living in or visiting the area.”
