Police dog tracks suspect who fled from Nottingham QMC

A police dog and his handler had a shift to remember after tracking down two men in the space of an hour.

PD Gibbs and handler PC Nicola Crabtree were called into action shortly after 2am on Wednesday (28 January) after concerns were raised for the welfare of a man in Eastwood.

Officers feared the man was going to harm himself and called in the dog to help locate him.

Gibbs, a two‑year‑old Belgian Malinois, demonstrated his exceptional nose by tracking the man’s scent for around 40 minutes before finding him in a local cemetery.

After establishing that he was safe, officers arrested the man on suspicion of theft and criminal damage.

Around half an hour later, Gibbs was back in action, this time tracking down a suspect who had fled from the QMC.

The man, who was wanted in connection with an assault, was tracked to the garden of a house on Derby Road and arrested.

Sergeant Nick Dachtler, of Nottinghamshire Police, said:

“This was a great evening’s work for Gibbs and his handler, who delivered back‑to‑back results in two completely different cases.

“In doing so, they reminded us again of the role our dogs and handlers play in keeping the public safe, and the vital part they play in the wider policing family.”
