Residents take part in artwork project to create park mural

Once completed the mosaic will be permanently installed in Jackie Bells Park, Netherfield.

An art project, supported by the UK Government’s Shared Prosperity Funding, is underway in Netherfield to inspire creativity and get local people learning new skills in their local community.

Local residents are being invited to take part in a series of workshops to help create a large mural, which will be displayed in a local park.

The large mosaic mural has been designed by local artist, Anna Dixon, who has worked with Netherfield residents to create a mural that reflects the key themes, memories and locations they associate with the area, which has a rich railway heritage.

Once a thriving railway town, Netherfield was home to the largest freight concentration yard in Europe, built by the Great Northern Railway in 1875. The yard was used to gather coal traffic from the Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire coalfields and dispatch it to London.

Once completed the mosaic will be permanently installed in Jackie Bells Park, Netherfield. The town will also receive other improvements including new tree planting, new railings and bins, the local initiative aims to encourage more visitors to the park and local shops.

The design itself is based on the history and the community of Netherfield, and the artist has already held workshops with Netherfield Primary School to teach school children how to make the mosaic letters, which will spell Netherfield, once added to the mural.

To get involved in the project, local people can book a free ticket on EventBrite to attend one of more of the making sessions at St Georges Centre in Netherfield.

No experience is required, the organisers will provide all tools and materials and teach participants the simple skills needed by guiding the group through the process of making the mosaic mural come to life.

Leader of Gedling Borough Council, Councillor John Clarke MBE said:
“This will be a great addition to Netherfield and it’ll bring the community together to create a piece of art that reflects the rich history of this town. We are really looking forward to the mosaic being unveiled at Jackie Bells, it will add some wonderful colour to the park. Other parts of the town will also see some improvements, thanks to the funding provided by Government. We want to celebrate the local heritage and get people back onto our high streets.”

Netherfield Ward Councillor Alison Hunt, has been closely involved with the project, since the start to engage the local community. Cllr Hunt is also supporting the Friends of Jackie Bell’s Field working group, who recently organised a community petition, to submit a bid for funding the parks renovation, including the replacement of some damaged playground equipment.
