String of arrests and charges in Newark crime crackdown

A 51-year-old man has become the latest to be charged in connection with a crackdown on burglaries and thefts at shops and businesses.

Wayne Cook, of Newark, was arrested and charged on Thursday (12 November) with burgling a shop in Mill Gate overnight on 28 October.

He pleaded guilty at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court the following day (13 November) and is due to be sentenced on 4 December.

The Neighbourhood team began a huge operation at the start of October to tackle town centre acquisitive crime.

Not only has there been a dramatic decline in reports of these incidents, it has also resulted in a string of arrests, charges and convictions. This includes:

– Tracey Barthorpe, 41, of Balderton charged with assaulting a shop worker in Kirk Gate on 25 October

– Alesha Hyland, 36, of no fixed abode was arrested and pleaded guilty to four shop thefts. She was sentenced to a 28 week prison sentence at Nottingham Magistrates’ court on Thursday 12 November.

– Michael Lowe, 31, of Newark was arrested and pleaded guilty to theft and breaching a criminal behaviour order. He was sentenced to eight weeks imprisonment on 10 November at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court

Heather Sutton, district commander for Newark and Sherwood, said: “My team have put a huge amount of work into combatting burglaries and thefts at our town centre businesses.

“This has resulted in several operations, including plain clothed officers patrolling the streets at night, in a bid to catch offenders unawares.

“It’s important to us to do what we can to protect our local businesses who have already suffered so much as a result of the pandemic and who may not be able to withstand another financial blow.”

“We will continue to take all burglaries seriously and investigate to the best of our ability.”
