A church treasurer has been charged with fraud and theft after he reportedly stole thousands of pounds.
John Broughton, 77, of Main Street in South Scarle appeared at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court after he was charged with two offences of fraud by abuse of position and three offences of theft.
The charges relate to incidents in St Cyprian’s Church in Sneinton in September 2016 and between January 2018 and 2020 where he allegedly stole money in excess of £14,000.
The offences relate to the time during which Broughton acted as the treasurer of the finances of the church.
He will next appear at Nottingham Crown Court on 9 May 2021.
Detective Constable Al Roper , of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “This was a complex investigation and I’m glad we have now secured a charge in relation to the incident”
“I hope this case sends a clear message to those who believe they can abuse their position for their own financial gain that offences will be uncovered and you will be brought before the courts.”
A spokesperson for the Diocese of Southwell and Nottingham confirmed that the diocese has co-operated fully with the police and takes very seriously all matters of conduct in relation to church officers.
