Two sexual assaults on a Nottinghamshire cycle route

A suspect has been arrested following reports of two separate sexual assaults on a cycle track in Newark.

Both victims were walking along the Sustrans, a track between Newark and Middlebeck, when they were assaulted.

The first incident happened at around 2pm on Saturday 19 August, with the second then taking place at around 3.50pm on Monday (21 August).

Police believe the two incidents are linked and involved the same suspect.

A 72-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of sexual assault by touching and has been released on bail with conditions.

PC Marcus Bloomfield, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “Both of these incidents would’ve been very distressing for the victims, who were understandably shaken up by what happened.

“We are taking these reports extremely seriously and will be carrying out visible patrols of the area as part of our ongoing inquiries in order to provide some further reassurance to the community and to ensure the suspect is complying with his bail conditions.

“While we’ve arrested a suspect in connection with these offences, our inquiries are still very much ongoing, so we’d ask anyone who witnessed what happened, has experienced a similar incident themselves, or has any other information that could assist our investigation to call the police.”

This can be reported to the police on 101, quoting incident 487 of 21 August 2023, or alternatively can be reported anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
