Truck seized in Clifton after large fly-tip discovered on country lane in Bunny

Individuals who allegedly fly-tipped a large amount of items on a Rushcliffe country lane have had their vehicle seized by Rushcliffe Borough Council (RBC).

A white Ford pickup truck was secured at a Clifton address by the Council, supported by Nottinghamshire Police, on Tuesday (May 12) after a large fly-tip of assorted waste was found on Fairham Brook Lane in Bunny.

The Council’s enforcement officers from Waste Investigations Support & Enforcement (WISE), alongside officers from RBC’s Community Safety Team, carried out investigations and found evidence linked to a business address in Leicestershire.

Further enquiries identified the details of the waste carrier who collected the waste and is now suspected of dumping it in the otherwise unspoilt countryside.

The vehicle is now being retained for several days while the owner is invited to come forward and explain its use in connection with the incident. It may ultimately be sold or destroyed if unclaimed, or forfeited subject to a court decision, with investigations ongoing.

RBC’s Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Environment and Safety, Cllr Rob Inglis, said: “Fly-tippers beware, this is the action we can take if you are linked with fly-tipping. There are no excuses for dumping items that blight communities and cause significant environmental issues.

“This incident is unfortunately one of many fly-tipping cases investigated each week by WISE and the Community Safety Team.

“Residents and businesses are reminded to take care when disposing of waste to ensure they do not inadvertently contribute to waste crime. Always use a registered waste carrier and understand what we call your legal duty of care.

“This means checking you are using a reputable waste collection company registered with the Environment Agency, and you can do so on their website.”

“Take extra care when sourcing providers via social media or being cold-called with a cheap quote. If it sounds too cheap to be true, it often is.

“Failure to make sure you keep up your duty of care may also result in action, such as a fine for a homeowner or business.”

There are other ways of disposing of your unwanted items, including:
Book a Bulky Waste Collection at www.rushcliffe.gov.uk or call 0115 981 9911.

Take items to household waste recycling sites operated by Nottinghamshire County Council.
Donate them to charity.
