Washing machine thief caught by members of the public in a Nottingham street

The would-be thief had even made a space in his own property ready for a new washing machine, say police.

A suspect was caught after he was stopped allegedly attempting to steal a washing machine from a new build property.

Officers were called to Winrow Gardens in Basford at around 6.20pm following reports of a burglary.

When police arrived, a washing machine was found in the street and a man had been detained by members of the public.

A 57-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of burglary and possession of a bladed article after a knife was recovered from the scene.

The washing machine had allegedly been stolen from a new build bungalow in the street before members of the public confronted the suspect.

The would-be thief had even created a space in his own property ready for a new washing machine, say police.

Police have praised those who apprehended the man while officers travelled to the incident.

Detective Constable Ben Grayson, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “While we would never encourage anyone to confront suspects or put themselves in danger, I would like to thank the members of the public who apprehended this man last night.

“Officers arrived within 20 minutes of the initial call but their actions ensured that we could arrest someone as part of our enquiries.

“We will now be investigating this report in order to establish the circumstances and take appropriate action against those responsible.

“Burglary has a devastating impact on businesses and individuals and we will always thoroughly investigate reports.

“Anyone who has any information on last night’s incident should contact Nottinghamshire Police on 101 quoting incident number 629 of 30 August 2021.”
