West Bridgford student, 13, achieves top GCSE Maths grade

A 13-year-old West Bridgford student has achieved the highest possible grade in GCSE Mathematics after taking the examination privately.

Luca studied the GCSE curriculum because he wanted to explore the subject further and sat the examination at Nottingham College this summer.

His result, received this week, confirmed that he had achieved a grade 9.

Earlier this year, Luca also scored 100 per cent in the UK Mathematics Trust Junior Mathematical Challenge.

His mother, Eleanor Cullen, said: “We couldn’t be more proud of Luca. He has worked incredibly hard, but what has been lovely to see is how much he genuinely enjoys maths. He just wanted to learn more and see how far he could take it.”

Alongside maths, Luca has taught himself Japanese and studies French and German at school.

He also takes lessons in violin, piano, singing, clarinet and guitar, and participates in his school’s orchestra and choir. His other interests include gaming, baking, gardening and spending time with friends.

Having completed the GCSE course, Luca has already begun working through the A-level Mathematics curriculum.
