A 15-year-old boy has been sentenced for stabbing a fellow pupil at a school in Nottingham.
The boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, stabbed his victim, also aged 15, once in the abdomen with a kitchen knife, leaving him requiring surgery.
Emergency services were called to Nottingham University Academy of Science and Technology (NUAST) shortly after 1.30pm on Thursday 5 March this year.
The suspect was arrested a short time later after sustaining a serious hand injury while trying to escape over a fence.
Nottingham Crown Court heard today (Friday) that the boy had arrived at school carrying two knives before launching a premeditated assault – the reason for which has never been explained.
The kitchen knife used in the attack was discarded immediately after the incident. A second knife was later found in the boy’s rucksack.
He later gave a no-comment interview to officers and has remained on remand in youth detention ever since.
At a hearing in July, he pleaded guilty to one count of wounding with intent and two counts of possessing a bladed article on school premises.
At the conclusion of today’s hearing, the boy was sentenced to five years and seven months in a young offenders’ institution.
Detective Constable Jaspal Nijjar, of Nottinghamshire Police, said:
“This was a violent and shocking assault carried out with a high degree of premeditation and in full view of other children.
“The victim in this case suffered very significant injuries and could have lost his life without immediate medical treatment.
“As the offender in this case is sentenced, I hope what happened here serves as a warning to other young people about the devastating consequences of taking a knife to school.
“I would also like to thank the victim and his family for the bravery they have shown throughout this investigation, as well as the many school staff who supported us during our investigation.”
