A dessert café in Derby city centre has temporarily closed amid a health investigation.
Major café chain Heavenly Desserts on London Road next to Derbion shopping centre is currently shut down.
A sign on the front entrance states the venue is closed due to “essential repairs”.
But the nature of the repairs needed is currently unknown. A staff member did not disclose details.
However, Derby City Council has confirmed its involvement with the sudden closure in relation to its environmental health department.
A council spokesperson said: “An investigation involving our environmental health team is under way. As this is an ongoing matter, we’re unable to provide further details.”
Details of how long the closure is in place for are uncertain. However, a member of staff said the store would be closed for “two days”.
The nature of the council’s investigation is unknown but all food businesses operating in Derby are subject to food safety inspections in accordance with the authority’s inspection programme.
Food businesses have a legal duty to ensure that the food they sell is safe to eat. This applies to shops, pubs, takeaways, cafés, restaurants and mobile traders.
A resident, who did not wish to be named, claimed environmental health officers visited the premises on Tuesday (March 3).
Heavenly Desserts has several branches across the country, including Nottingham, Northampton, Leicester and Birmingham. The business launched in 2008.
