The large-scale artwork has been painted on the sides of the recently installed sports cabins following incidents of graffiti at the site. The project was proposed by local ward councillor and Deputy Leader of Gedling Borough Council, Councillor Jenny Hollingsworth, who is also a member of a local group supporting parks and open spaces in Gedling village.
Created by Nottingham-based artist Alex Rubes, the mural has been carefully designed to reflect the identity of Lambley Lane Recreation Ground and the wider area. The artwork includes references to the site’s regular sporting use by Mapperley All Stars Football Club and Burton Joyce Cricket Club, while also celebrating the area’s history and its close connection to Gedling Country Park.
The design has been developed in consultation with local ward councillors, the Friends of Gedling Country Park group and regular users of the site, helping to ensure the mural reflects the interests and character of the local community.
Alex Rubes previously created the popular mural at Breck Hill Park in Arnold, which has become a much-loved feature of the park since its completion and has been warmly welcomed by residents in the area.
Councillor Viv McCrossen Portfolio Holder for Climate Change, Parks and Environmental Health, said: “This mural is a fantastic addition to the Lambley Lane Recreation Ground. Not only will it help to discourage further graffiti, it’s created a real sense of identity and pride for the site. The design celebrates the sports clubs that play here, and of course, the wonderful natural environment we’re very lucky to have on our doorstep. We’re grateful to everyone who has contributed to the project.”
The completed mural now provides a colourful and lasting feature for residents, visitors and sports clubs to enjoy, creating a stronger sense of identity for the site while celebrating the people, local history and natural environment that make the area unique.
